We were able to get the price down to $5,732.99 by de-specing the bike and up to $16,516.47 by going a bit crazy (of course we need an SRM)
Using vertex groups instead, assigning all vertices to all hooks and creating vertex groups to limit their influence, I again have no problems, although in this case, the ctrl-h interface is the easiest way to make your hooks and there's nothing to gain from vertex groups
